Beach Makeup Tips

While we get a lot of heat where I live, it’s not typically humid - and certainly never as humid as a tropical destination. So when I got there I di dmy makeup as I normally do, and found that it looked like a weird slippery mask a few hours later.

Time to make some adjustments.

Primer is an absolute must. It’ll give you a better surface to put your makeup on, and it will help mask some imperfections so you’ve got less to cover up with actual makeup. Plus, if you’re oily like me, it’ll help keep some of that at bay, which is a must when you’re already in a moist, humid climate.

I found that a minimal (read: incredibly light) application of foundation was needed to get my skin tone even at first. But after a few days, as I developed a tan, I didn’t need that anymore. So go slow with your foundation and eliminate it once you don’t need it anymore.

Also, if you really do just plan on diving right into the water, a liquid foundation won’t really last, even with your primer, so skip it if that’s your agenda.

Next, you’ll want to use a concealer to cover up any glaring blemishes. But since cream concealers (even with primer) will slide off in this kind of heat and humidity, it’s time to turn to a mineral/powder concealer. Dab it on under your eyes and on any discoloration with a concealer brush.

Having pink cheeks won’t be necessary as your skin will be warmed by the sun, but I’ll add a bit of bronzer (instead of blush) on my cheekbones because it’ll blend well with the natural skin tone I’ll get at the beach.

For the eyes, use an eyelid primer first and then a cream eyeshadow with staying power, like Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow. Read that post if you’ve not used the product before, it’s amazing stuff. Choose a more neutral shade (I like “Flatter Me”).

You’ll want a waterproof mascara - duh.

Eyeliner I’m divided about - I like the way my eyes pop so much more with eyeliner, but it’s not exactly a natural look. I usually settled on a very, very thin line, using Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel Eyeliner, which does exactly what it says on the tin - stays put all day, even in water.

I dust with a loose powder to finish it off - more out of habit though, as with the humidity and heat and my skin it doesn’t really make a difference within the hour.

What can you expect from this routine?

Your skin will be even toned from the primer and concealer, and a little flushed from the bronzer. Depending on how much swimming you do, it may or may not stay put all day. I found I could get it to stay on for most of the day as long as I didn’t towel it off!

Your eye makeup should still be there by the end of the day if you use the products I mentioned - again, unless you towel it off by accident.

The key here is to have a very light hand - what looks “natural” in your bathroom mirror will probably look garish in the bright sunlight at the beach, so go easy on your product!
